Year 3 Topic Launch

Year 3 launched their Invaders of Britain topic today with a visit from Hengist, an Anglo-Saxon skald, who treated them to an extract of Beowulf in Old English. The children were interested to notice the similarities of some words to our modern English and they were able to work out some animal names such as meresw─źn meaning 'sea-pig' - or dolphin!

Hengist left us with an ancient message, written in futhark or runes, and asked us to decode it as he was unable to.

This was an exciting launch, with a tantalising look back in time and also forward to the rest of our work this term which will culminate in a trip to West Stow Anglo-Saxon village.
