History Off the page

Year 6 pupils were transported back in time for an unforgettable day of immersive learning, thanks to History Off the Page’s World War II experience. The day was carefully designed to bring history to life, and it certainly delivered.

In the morning, the children stepped into the shoes of wartime evacuees. Dressed in 1940s-style clothing, they arrived at their “new school” in the countryside, where they were greeted by strict but kind teachers. The classroom was set up just like it would have been during the war, with old-fashioned desks, handwriting practice, and even air raid drills. Pupils quickly adapted to the rules and routines of the time, gaining a real sense of what life was like for children during the Blitz.

The afternoon brought a complete change of pace. The school hall was transformed into a bustling wartime village. Pupils took on roles as shopkeepers, bakers, grocers, and customers. Armed with identity cards and ration books, they had to make careful choices about what to buy and how to spend their coupons. This hands-on activity helped them understand the impact of rationing and the importance of community during the war.

Throughout the day, the children were fully engaged, asking thoughtful questions and staying in character. The experience was not only educational but also incredibly fun. It gave pupils a deeper understanding of the challenges faced by people during WWII, especially children, and helped them appreciate the resilience and resourcefulness of that generation.

Overall, the WWII day was a huge success. It brought history off the page and into real life, leaving a lasting impression on everyone involved.
