Year 1 Firefighter Visit

On Friday, Year 1 had a visit from Saffron Walden firefighter Mark Webb, father of Luke in Mrs Savill's class.

He showed the children his special fire-fighting clothing, helmet with torch and very heavy breathing apparatus.  He asked questions for the children to answer about how these help him do his job safely.

Firefighter Webb then explained how working as a team is vital to fighting fires, with some children being assigned roles in a team, driving a 'fire engine' to a fire and then explaining how they would tackle the blaze.  It was very exciting!

Everyone then learnt how to escape smoke in a house fire, and the children asked lots of interesting questions.   Finally, every child received an Essex Fire Service pen, bookmark and a fire safety book.

Many thanks indeed to Luke's dad for coming in - it really put all our learning powers such as Be Co-operative and Don't Give Up into context.
