On Tuesday 11th January 2011, Katherine Semar represented the Uttlesford District at the Essex County Football Finals. This took place at Thurstable Sports College, Tiptree, Colchester. The tournament involved sixteen teams who were split into four groups. Firstly, each team would play each other once and your final position would determine which group you would qualify for in the afternoon.
In the first group, Katherine Semar faced St John Fisher, Tudor Court and Holland Park. The team battled hard in all three games and came away undefeated with three 0-0 draws. Although the team had failed to score a goal, their determination in defence and will to win the ball back meant they allowed the opposition very few chances. This meant they qualified for Pool B for the afternoon and were guaranteed a finish no lower than 8th.
In the afternoon group, they faced Warren Primary, Bocking and West Leigh Juniors. The difference in quality was evident in these games yet the players still made it difficult for the opposition. They lost 2-0 to Warren; drew 1-1 with Bocking (with the goal coming from an excellent freekick by Mitosz) and finished with a 3-1 defeat to West Leigh Juniors (Mason grabbing the only goal in that game). Superior goal difference meant they finished 3rd in that group which saw them qualify for a 5th vs 6th play off against Janet Duke School. Unfortunately, the day ended with a 3-1 loss but John Boyle did grab a fantastic consoliation goal, finishing off clinically after a long solo run. Their final position was a respectable 6th place.
The boys performed admirably and were a credit to the school. Many thanks to Mr Haralambous and the Nicholls brothers for the efforts and to Mrs Boyle for keeping the boys fed and watered.
