We went to Great Notley and had fun on the high ropes and the adventure playground in the park.

The weather was superb and a great time was had by all.

The swashbuckling musical comedy, packed with treasure maps, talking parrots, and high-seas hijinks, was brought to life by the talented pupils in a performance that had the audience in stitches and on their feet. From the opening scene to the final bow, the young cast delivered their lines with confidence and charisma, showcasing months of hard work and rehearsal.

Parents, staff, and fellow pupils were treated to catchy musical numbers, clever choreography, and a colourful set that transported everyone straight into the heart of Lumbago!  The production was a true team effort, with students also helping behind the scenes with props, costumes, and set changes.

Headteacher, Mrs. Puxley praised the children’s efforts: “This was a fantastic way to celebrate the end of their time at Katherine Semar. The children were incredible – they’ve made us all so proud.”

The performance was not only a celebration of creativity and teamwork but also a fitting farewell for the Year 6 cohort as they prepare to set sail for secondary school.

We learnt how to play the drums, place them and explored making different sounds.

The project was designed to use creative, musical approaches to explore the themes: 

• How can we better understand our connection to the world around us? 

• How can we balance our personal needs with the health of the planet?

• How can we be positive contributors to a sustainable future?

The immersive approach – led by folk musician Hazel Askew and Cambridge University’s Sarah Sharp - explored how there are no ‘right answers’ to these questions, but how, in thinking about the future and the decisions we make, we can keep contributing to positive change.  The children enjoyed learning songs, composing further verses of songs, and exploring in various inventive ways how we are linked to the environment and the impact of the choices we all have to make.  They also enjoyed listening to and performing with a wide range of instruments.

They enjoyed playing Roman games, which added a fun twist to their learning. The highlight for many was taking part in mock gladiator battles, showing great energy and team spirit.

This hands-on experience helped the children learn more about Roman culture, history, and traditions in a fun and memorable way.

This is a very special experience for everyone in the school, beginning with a procession of candle bearers into the darkened hall.

The children all sang beautifully, and special mention must be made of our soloists this year, all from Year 2 – Maggie, Jack, Dougie and Archie, whose confident singing amazed and delighted everyone.
