Last Thursday the Year 3 & 4 cricket squad won the rapid fire cricket finals at Saffron Walden Cricket Club.

Our gala children also attended the Essex County Swim Finals in Chelmsford.  We are so proud to announce that both squads (3/4 & 5/6) came second overall!  The children have worked so hard and we are so proud of them all.  Thank you to all our wonderful sports coaches for all their commitment.

The children had worked very hard for this performance, led by the wonderful Mrs Wheeler.

The concert presented a selection of songs from the piece Yanomamo, by Peter Rose and Ann Conlan. This piece explores the beauty of the rainforest, and the interconnection between its animals, plants and people - the Yanomami.

We performed to the school in the afternoon and then again to parents after school. Several pupils had the opportunity to showcase their singing with solo spots. Bella performed The Sloth, a beautifully slow and ponderous song requiring great vocal control and poise. Eleanor, Martha, Katie, Poppy and Lulu introduced us to The Jungle Garden, singing their solo lines with sensitivity.

The songs were linked with some narration, ably delivered by Bethan, Florence, Evie, Evan, Lily, Rose, Julia and Lulu.

Ava, Bella, Elsa and Lana from Year Six have been running their own cheer club at lunchtimes and the Y2 children performed to the rest of the school. They showed their core values of confidence and resilience. The routine was stunning and we are very grateful to the Y2 children and Y6 cheer captains who have worked so hard to choreograph and teach the dance.

Residents were treated to a medley of gospel songs, pop songs and music from the swing era. The children gave a fabulous performance and even sang Happy Birthday to one special resident who was celebrating her birthday!

Overnight we had a visit from the Jolly Rogers who left us a treasure hunt. We had to follow the clues around the school which led to some very exciting treasure. They left us our new topic book - The Pirates Next Door as well as some certificates and a new Playmobil figure for our pirate ship. We have already enjoyed reading our new book.

The children enjoyed handling artefacts, discussing what their purpose could be, how they were made, what they were made from and then discovering if their theories were correct.  The museum and Anglo-Saxon village were also very interesting, and the children asked and answered questions with our guide in the mead house at the end of the day. Mrs Savill was approached by a very kind lady during the day, who was a retired primary school teacher, because she wanted to tell us how very impressed she was with the children's behaviour and curiosity.

They did a fantastic job.

]]> Fri, 10 May 2024 08:31:43 GMT https://www.katherinesemar.co.uk/news/?pid=443&nid=5&storyid=386 <![CDATA[ Jaguar Class Make Pizzas ]]> https://www.katherinesemar.co.uk/news/?pid=443&nid=5&storyid=385 Jaguar class had a wonderful DT experience researching and making pizza dinners this week.  We started by investigating different side salads and looking at pizza sauces, before taste testing a range of pizzas!  Then we designed and planned our healthy pizza dinners to include seasonal vegetables in our ingredients.  Next, we made the dough and left it to prove while we chopped our salad items and pizza toppings.  When the dough was prepped, we added toppings and cooked our pizzas.  What a fantastic cooking session.  Everyone enjoyed taste testing their delicious meals.  Just look at those happy faces!

Also, it was awesome when they walked up the side and played their instruments. My favourite part was when they did the final bit which was Stevie Wonder’s “Sir Duke”. The pieces were amazing, my favourite piece was matchmakers because it was interactive.

The Early Years children thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the medieval artefacts and exploring the castle grounds - we even got to go up to the roof! We had a story tour from a knight and servant telling us about the castle as a home in the past and completed activities learning more about what it might have been like to live in a castle long ago.

This was a lovely opportunity to perform and share what they have been working on this term with Mrs Wheeler. The orchestra played confidently, and the choir gave the audience a preview of a larger work they will be performing in May, entitled “Yanomamo”. The concert also included some solo spots in which pupils performed on piano, flute and clarinet.
This was a joyful celebration of music making at Katherine Semar School.

After a term of hard work choosing, planning and investigating at an after-school club, the children presented their work to hundreds of secondary children and adults and judges from STEM.
