]]> Tue, 18 Jul 2023 10:45:53 GMT https://www.katherinesemar.co.uk/news/?pid=443&nid=4&storyid=304 <![CDATA[ Year 3 Visit to Walton-On-The-Naze ]]> https://www.katherinesemar.co.uk/news/?pid=443&nid=4&storyid=303 Year 3 had a wonderful sunny day at Walton-on-the-Naze to land their Rocks topic.  They undertook fieldwork, spotting human and physical geography features, learnt about coastal erosion and sea defences and also enjoyed studying the different layers of rock and soils in the cliffs - everyone found at least one fossil, and a couple of children even found fossilised shark teeth.

The Early Years children thoroughly enjoyed seeing all the underwater animals and also exploring Dinosaur World. We also saw meerkats, tortoises and mongooses. A firm favourite was playing on the beach after the aquarium. 

]]> Mon, 10 Jul 2023 08:34:42 GMT https://www.katherinesemar.co.uk/news/?pid=443&nid=4&storyid=301 <![CDATA[ Year 5 Trip to Epping Forest ]]> https://www.katherinesemar.co.uk/news/?pid=443&nid=4&storyid=300 Year 5 had an exciting trip to Epping Forest to land our Rivers topic.  We started the day revising the water cycle before learning some geology about permeable and impermeable rocks.  We took soil samples from different areas of the forest to see how this affected the ways rainfall is absorbed into the ground.  This helped us to understand one of the possible ways a river can begin.  In the afternoon, we investigated different sites along the river, identifying river features and measuring the width and depth of the river, flow rate as well as looking at the rocks and pebbles found on the river bed.  This consolidated the children's learning in class on how rivers change from source to mouth.

The orchestra presented four pieces including the Fanfare from Monteverdi's Orfeo and an energetic performance of El Cumbanchero.

The choir presented a performance of Orpheus, with songs by Mrs Wheeler, who conducted both choir and orchestra.

The children had worked with great commitment in their rehearsals, singing and playing with expression and passion.

]]> Fri, 12 May 2023 09:04:42 GMT https://www.katherinesemar.co.uk/news/?pid=443&nid=4&storyid=288 <![CDATA[ May Day and Coronation Celebrations ]]> https://www.katherinesemar.co.uk/news/?pid=443&nid=4&storyid=287 On Friday 5th May Katherine Semar School held their annual May Day Celebration.   This consists of a May Day Procession led by the May Queen, the Green Man, his Page and two flower carriers from each class. 

Once the procession has circled the playground, the Green Man crowns the May Queen with a circlet of flowers.  As three cheers ring out for the Queen, she takes her place on the dais with her attendants.  The children then provide entertainment for the May Queen.  This takes the form of Country Dancing from the Early Years and Year 1 and Maypole Dancing by Year 2.  This year we also included Coronation celebrations – the Junior children came to school wearing Red, White & Blue and the whole school came together to sing songs to celebrate the King being crowned.

Thank you so much to Adam, our visiting scholar, who is actually a third year student at Cambridge University studying Anglo-Saxon, Norse and Celtic, for taking us back in time for a short while to start our topic.

This orchestra is made up entirely of incredibly talented musicians ranging in age from 13 to 18. 

We were also treated to a number of other pieces which showcased the instruments in the orchestra. To hear a live orchestra of such a high standard, in our local world-class concert hall was indeed an exciting and inspiring way to start the Summer term.

They found out lots about their local environment and even learned lots about the geology of Saffron Walden and the surrounding area. They also learned why buildings in the local area were built with the materials that they are. We then explored the museum and found lots of information about some other learning that we have been doing this year in Year 2: The story of Rama and Sita, The fire in The Rose and Crown Hotel, Winstanley’s lighthouse and life cycles. The children were AMAZING and coped well with walking in the rain, snow, sleet and even hail! Thank you to all the wonderful parent helpers who came with us. YOU were amazing too! Enjoy the photos.
