Year 1 Pirate Day

Year 1 landed their topic with a Pirate Day. The children all made and tried grog... This was a real hit with some and a huge miss with others! We also made biscuits and decorated them to look like pirates before munching on them while watching Peter Pan. We all then made a pirate hat and did some storytelling. Finally, we enjoyed the weather by playing pirate games and doing some dancing on the field. What a brilliant day.... with some TERRIFYING pirate costumes!

Year 4 Fairground Rides

In DT, Year 4 have been designing and building electrical fairground rides. The children applied their learning of circuits during their science lessons to successfully build moving fairground rides.

Year 2 Wicken Fen Visit

Year 6 Production

The children of Year 6 were transported to a galaxy far, far away for their end of year production. Called ‘Star Warts’, the story was about Luke Warmwater and his aunt, Daft Ada, who live a lonely life on their secluded space station, Junction 51. But when Princess Nebula's ship crash lands into Luke's bedroom, they soon learn of the evil Umpire and his dark desire to conquer the universe.

Along with Toby Wonky Nosebleed, Zak Solo and Nigel the Nookie, they follow Princess Nebula in her rebellion. Aboard the Millennium Penguin, they whizz warp-speed through the galaxy to the Umpire's High Tower on Planet Wimbledonia. But little do they know, the Umpire is about to strike back!

The children had a great time rehearsing after auditions and put on a spectacular show to the school, parents and governors. Their singing and dance routines were incredible and it was a fitting way to end the school year.

Year 3 Visit Walton-on-the-Naze

Year 3 had a wonderful trip to Walton-on-the-Naze to complement their learning in geography and science. They ascended the Naze Tower to spot human and physical features, searched the beach for fossils (we found lots), found out about some of the natural history of the area (we even found a dead seal, a dog fish and a mullet!) and enjoyed delicious ice creams. It truly was a splendid day.

EY Visit the Sealife Centre

We had a wonderful time at the aquarium to land our topic learning. The children were absolutely amazing, and it was so wonderful to see their faces light up when they saw all the different animals. It was a very exciting day. Just before we got on the coach we ventured on to the beach where the children enjoyed using buckets and spades, finding shells and finding plastic (what wonderful children looking after the environment).

Creative Arts Week

Last week the whole school took part in creative arts week. The theme was "The Environment" and pupils took part in art, dance and music activities based around this theme.

Summer Fete

Thank you to everyone who attended our fete last week. It raised an incredible £4800 towards our 3G pitch. The highlight was definitely the teachers obstacle race and we would like to thank Just Gym for setting this up for us!

Year 4 Common Fieldwork

Today, Year 4 walked down to The Common to conduct some fieldwork. They were surveying the public to find out how they use The Common and how they would like it to be used in the future. They also created their own maps of The Common.

Year 5 General Knowledge Quiz

On Friday 24th June, four fantastic Year five children attended the general knowledge quiz at RAB. It was against seven local schools. The team showed great confidence and positivity in all the rounds which included subjects like geography, history, flags and chocolate bars!

Year 6 France Trip

Year 6 capped off 4 years of French lessons with a fantastic trip to Boulogne-Sur-Mer and Le Touquet.

After whizzing under La Manche in Le Shuttle, we found ourselves shopping in a traditional French market, interacting with locals, dining in French restaurants and touring the old city of Boulogne. We finished off with a trip to a biscuit factory in Le Touquet where we got to sample the finished products.

Year 3 Visit West Stow

On Thursday 26^th May, Year 3 visited West Stow Anglo Saxon Village to complete this half term’s topic learning.

We visited the museum filled with artefacts unearthed by archaeologists at West Stow. We agreed the best part was the reconstructed village and actually going inside the houses. A good time was had by all! Thank you to all our parent helpers too.

Orangutan Class Assembly 15.6.22

On Wednesday 15^th June, Orangutans welcomed parents and carers in for our class assembly. The children have enjoyed learning about rainforests, and so we made and presented a quiz to the audience. Like the rest of the world, the Orangutans have gone Wordle-crazy, so we made up our own! Well done to the children in Year 3, who guessed the answer on their fourth try. We also shared our collaborative poem What a poem is not and finished with a performance of Jack Johnson’s environmental song The 3Rs. Thank you for coming and please enjoy our photos.

Father's Week Visits

This week we have been welcoming dads and grandads into their child's class to celebrate Father's Day. The children all had a fantastic time showing their visitors their classrooms and sharing some exciting activities with them too!

Year 2 Topic Launch

Year 2 have launched their new topic ‘Look Up, Look Down’ by making their very own explorer snacks. Having talked a little bit about what explorers might need on an expedition we decided they needed a healthy diet, lots of nuts, proteins, carbohydrates and vegetables. However we also thought about giving them an extra boost of energy with something sugary so we decided to make peppermint creams. We also designed bags for our snacks to go in. The children had a fantastic time making their snacks and thought they were delicious!

Year 5 Visit Kew Gardens

This half term Year 5 are learning about the rainforest and for their launch they were very lucky to be taken to Kew Gardens this Tuesday. The sun was shining and it was a fabulous day. Over the course of the day the children ventured around the grounds of Kew Garden, were taken on a rainforest experience through the Princess of Wales Conservatory and had fun exploring the children’s garden. Throughout the rainforest experience the children walked through 10 different climate zones where they saw giant waterlilies, pineapples growing from the ground, the ‘chocolate nut’ tree, a huge variety of cacti, observed a poisonous dart frog up close and much more.

Year 2 Royal Ball

Year 2 had a Royal Ball to land their Twisted Tales topic.

They played lots of games (including a princess and the pea game to see who really was a real prince or princess) and did lots of dancing! It was a lovely way to end the topic and they had such a fantastic time.

Dolphin Class at Forest School

We had a fantastic afternoon in the forest, the children had time to explore the area. We also made minibeasts out of clay, made soups in the mud kitchen and enjoyed swinging on the rope swing.

Commonwealth Games Event

The children had a morning trying lots of new sports and games at Lord Butler on Wednesday. They all agreed that their favourite part was the trampolining! They all had an absolutely brilliant morning and are all keen for the next event!

Turtle Class Visit Forest School

Turtle class have been enjoying the freedom, joy and challenges of Forest School.

They have loved sliding down muddy slopes, making dens, swinging on the rope swing, climbing trees and even using the forest imaginatively to make 'salad!'

May Day Celebrations

Katherine Semar Infants celebrated May Day in style again this year.

The May Queen, Erin, was crowned by The Green Man, Harry, and was treated to a festival of dancing. Early Years danced The Cumberland Circle, followed by the Year one children who did the Pat-a-Cake Polka. The festival culminated in the Year two children dancing 3 maypole dances: The Barber’s Pole, Spider’s Web and Sixes.

A great time was had by all!

Orangutan Class at Forest School

On the first day of the term, the Orangutans had a great time getting back to their natural habitat – forest school! The children enjoyed exploring, building dens, roasting marshmallows, and whittling sticks. As you can see from the photos, it was lots of fun!

Year 1 Visit The Shuttleworth Collection

Year One had a fantastic launch of their topic by visiting The Shuttleworth Collection. The children were given the opportunity to see many different types of transport all in working order. The children even got the chance to travel in a Vintage Bus and see an old plane take off and land. The children had such a wonderful time and I am sure it will be something they remember for a long time!

Year 3 Topic Launch

Year 3 launched their Invaders of Britain topic today with a visit from Hengist, an Anglo-Saxon skald, who treated them to an extract of Beowulf in Old English. The children were interested to notice the similarities of some words to our modern English and they were able to work out some animal names such as mereswīn meaning 'sea-pig' - or dolphin!

Hengist left us with an ancient message, written in futhark or runes, and asked us to decode it as he was unable to.

This was an exciting launch, with a tantalising look back in time and also forward to the rest of our work this term which will culminate in a trip to West Stow Anglo-Saxon village.

Early Years Topic Launch

Early Years launched their topic this week by going on a minibeast hunt. We thought about different habitats and decided to go into the school's wildlife garden. The children found slugs and woodlice under logs, ladybirds and butterflies on leaves, and spiders hiding in the shed.

Jaguar Class Visit Forest School

Jaguars enjoyed a wonderful day in the forest to celebrate a fabulous spring term of hard work. The sun shone brightly and the children enjoyed den building, tool making and toasting Hot Cross Buns on the open fire.

New Early Years Outdoor Area

The children in early years have been so excited to play with all the lovely new outdoor equipment.

They have enjoyed building dens, riding bikes on the new roadway, balancing and travelling across the climbing frame and exploring the waterwall.

Year 1 Visit Boydells Farm

Year One had a brilliant time on their trip for our topic. They learnt all about the body parts of the different animals and how their teeth give us clues about their diet. The children had a wonderful day feeding animals, cuddling chicks and bottle feeding lambs.

Ukrainian Fundraiser Events

Katherine Semar School recently held two fundraisers to help the situation in Ukraine.

Firstly a fundraising lunch took place on Thursday 31^st March. The catering team led by Gungega Krastina cooked a Ukrainian dessert for the children to try.

Parents and carers then “brought a lunch to help Ukraine”. The children loved trying the dessert and have asked for it to become a regular on the menu!

Big Bang Science Fair

Twelve students from Year 5 participated in the annual Big Bang Science Fair at Herts & Essex school, Bishops Stortford. The children showed great creativity and perseverance in the weeks leading up to the event as they designed and carried out their own investigation. The children were so amazing on the day as they described their investigations to adults and children alike. The STEM judges were blown away by our children especially the Fizziest Bath Bomb group.

Gala Swimming

On Wednesday 9th March, our Years 3-4 and 5-6 Gala squads took part in the Gala Swimming Competition. We are so proud that they all came first and we are now through to the next round of the competition in Dunmow.

Year 5 Visit Stibbington Centre

The Young Shakespeare Company Visit Year 4

Year 4 were lucky enough to have a visit from the Young Shakespeare Company who performed A Midsummer Night’s Dream. The children were asked to play the parts of the main characters while learning about the text which will inspire their own writing this half term.

EY Gingerbread Man Bake-Off

To celebrate the end of our topic ‘ Food Glorious Food’ we had a gingerbread man bake off. The children made gingerbread men following the recipe, we then decorated our gingerbread men by melting chocolate (we discussed how states of matter change from solid to liquid and liquid to solid).

Year 4 Visit Bhaktivedanta Manor

Year 4 were lucky enough to visit Bhaktivedanta Manor to support the learning they had done on Hinduism. The children were able to go on cart rides pulled by oxen, eat delicious curry, dress up as Hindu gods, wear traditional clothing and feed the rescue cows.
