Children at Katherine Semar have the opportunity, in Year 6, of completing the cycling proficiency Programme.
This programme helps to develop observation and manoeuvrability skills, introduces the Highway Code for Young Road Users, teaches the importance of cycle maintenance and hazard awareness, and provides information and advice on being conspicuous and wearing protective headgear.
Training courses are usually taught over 6, one hour sessions following the principles of safe cycling. The course includes the basics of off-road training and on-road training, progressing from quiet roads to building confidence on busier roads.
In week 1, the children have a bike and helmet safety check. they have 5 further lessons and then sit the written theory test. They then complete a practical test. Up to 40 students can complete the course each year so the children need to bring their permission letters to school before all the places run out!
