Monday – Fancy Dress Day
We had an amazing launch to Katherine Semar Book Week with so many fantastic costumes. The infant children dressed up as their favourite book character whilst the juniors created costumes to represent interesting adjectives. We had Mr Men, princesses, Gangsta Grannies and a brilliant Zog! Some of the adjectives were so tricky to guess. We had incognito, effervescent, puzzling and many synonyms of athletic! Thank you to everyone who supported our children by creating these wonderful costumes.
Year 5 were also lucky enough to meet local author, Jenny Landor, who told them all about her first book, The Mirror of Pharos. They were lucky enough to hear Jenny herself read the first chapter.
Years four, five and six had an inspirational visit from author Mark Lowery which involved lots and lots of laughter, wigs, doughnuts, shower caps and the grand opening of the safe. Mark shared lots of writing tips with the children and they all enjoyed a doughnut themed writing workshop with him throughout the day.
Wednesday – Creative Writing Day
Wednesday morning was a little unusual at Katherine Semar as a sneaky crew of pirates (an odd looking bunch) kidnapped Mr Gilkes and Mr Warwick and refused to let them go unless their pirate treasure was returned! The children had fun throughout the day hotseating the pirates and writing ransome notes, newspaper articles and brilliant pirate descriptions. Luckily the children reminded the pirates of our school’s core values: kindness and respect, and Mrs Puxley was able to negotiate the return of the sports coaches before the end of the day!
We had a brilliant visit from Pippa Goodhart, author of You Choose, Just Imagine and the Winnie the Witch chapter books. She told us all about how she develops her ideas and read us some of her books.
At any moment during Book Week, the Read Freeze bell can ring and everyone has to freeze and read a book for five minutes! Here are some of the children and teachers busy reading during Read Freeze!
