We had a fantastic launch to our London’s Burning topic by inviting in Steve, a firefighter who works for the fire service throughout Essex, into school. He told us the story of The Great Fire of London from the perspective of the people who were putting out the fires. We learned about the equipment they would have used and discovered that it was not very effective! We found out that there was no fire service in 1666 and it was The Great Fire of London that encouraged the king to form the first fire brigades.
We also learned about fire safety and how to keep our homes safe. We learned about smoke alarms and how to call the emergency services if we needed to.
We are looking forward to learning much more about The Great Fire of London in our topic work.
