The P.T.A. (Parent Teacher Association) at Katherine Semar is composed of parents, teachers and staff. Its role is to encourage closer links with between home and school. PTAs are best known for their fundraising work, but they have a useful social function too.
In the last couple of years, we have had Pamper Evenings, Quiz Nights, social evenings at the Railway Pub for the adults and also a Car Boot Sale.
For the children, there are school discos, film nights and treasure hunts, as well as seeing Secret Santa in his amazing grotto, and the present rooms for Mother’s and Father’s day. Plus of course, there are the summer and Christmas fetes, which we all – children, parents and staff – can enjoy.
All parents of children at our schools are automatically eligible to join the committee – just by being a parent!
No formal commitment is required – parents are encouraged to help as, and when, they can. Requests for help may be made in the newsletter especially around the time of our fetes (our major fundraising events of the year). Some parents are able to come into school during the day in the week before to help with the fete set up. Others are able to take things home to fold, number, wrap up or prepare in the evenings at home. Parents out at work during school time are often able to help set up, clear away or man stalls on the fete day. Or some are able to offer their expertise – produce banners promoting the fete, for example.
If you would like to come along to a fundraising meeting, help out at an upcoming event, or suggest ways to raise or spend funds, it would be good to hear from you!
It is a great opportunity to be play a bigger role in our school community as the PTA helps provide the extras to enhance the children’s learning journey.
We work with the Head Teachers to provide the finance for areas not covered by the school’s standard budget. The main criteria is that areas to be funded should benefit as many children as possible.
Recent funding was a large contribution to the cost of the Infant school’s Maze, and previously to lunchtime outdoor play equipment for the junior school playground and for the setting up of the chickens in the pond/wood area.
Art Room Project
This year all the money raised by our amazing Fund Raising Team, with your support, will be going towards the refurbishment of the School Art Room. It has been estimated that a total of about £10,000 would be needed for new furniture, equipment, kiln, installation of hot water with new sink facilities and general decoration.
We are very excited about this project and we now have these ‘totaliser boards’ in reception of each school, so everyone can see how much we have raised as we go through the year.
